Parish Profile: (Excerpts taken from the Northern Lights summer issue, 2000)

Fort Nelson is in the North Eastern Corner of British Columbia, on Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway. The population of our community is about 6200-6500, including outskirts and its major industries are forestry and natural gas.

Divinity students from the Fellowship of the West (Montreal) began holding services here in 1954.

Our Church is fully self-supporting and big in the Holy Spirit! We have about 35-40 regular families and our attendance averages just over fifty. Frequently our congregations are larger during the peak part of the year, between September and June.

Our Parish Statement of Purpose sums up what we are about: “To glorify God as a community of love, in all that we say and do. Calling people to faith in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ; equipping and releasing them for service, under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.”

In short, we are a worshipping, equipping, mission-minded Church reaching out with the Good News of Christ in our community and beyond.

God has been so faithful to us over the years! It is exciting to see how He has blessed us and used us to change lives and make a difference for Jesus as we have sought to know His mind and follow His direction.

Prayer has been a huge priority for us. Again and again we have seen how God responds to heart-felt prayer, especially when the parish as a whole, or a large section of the parish is united behind a prayer initiative. When the people pray, the Lord moves!

Our worship is lively, participatory and Spirit-filled, lifting up Jesus as the supreme and only Saviour. We use a blend of contemporary praise and traditional hymns. Many offer their spiritual gifts in worship and other aspects of parish life.

Ministry to our children is very important to us. Our Sunday School program has been strong over the years. We need though, to put a greater focus on ministry to our youth and we hope to grow in this area in the future.

Outreach and mission has long been central for our Church. We support a foster child in Uruguay through the Christian Children’s Fund of Canada. Parish outreach projects have raised money to send Bibles to Rusia and to support the victims of Hurricane Mitch. In 2000 we began supporting our new missionaries, Garth and Denise Neels and their family. The Neels are working in Lima Peru with the South American Missionary Society of Canada.

Alpha courses both for youth and adults are being used in our parish and community. This is a great tool for evangelism and discipleship building in our local community. Through Alpha we hope to strengthen our fellowship and better equip us to reach out with the Gospel.

It is a privilege to serve the Lord in the Diocese of Yukon, and we are so thankful for the leadership of Bishop Buckle. Please pray for us as we seek to be faithful to God’s call to lift up the Name of Jesus in this part of the world.
