Excerpts taken from the article in Northern Lights magazine Winter 2004 Truly Blessed! That is the only way to describe the 100th anniversary of St.Saviour’s Anglican Church in Carcross on Sunday, August 8th, 2004 – 100 years to the day of the churches consecration. A warm, sunny day, a packed church, an inspirational service and great singing. Truly the Holy Spirit was there! Bishop Terry Buckle preached, the Rev. David Pritchard, priest in charge, led the service and celebrated, Dean Peter Williams of the Cathedral in Whitehorse, Archdeacon Sean Murphy of Northern Apostles in Whitehorse, Archdeacon Arthur Privett, honourary assistant at the Cathedral in Whitehorse and parishioners, Millie Jones, Linda Pringle and Brian Pope played supporting roles. Following the service two mayday trees were planted by Bishop Buckle and the Rev. Pritchard to commemorate the celebration. After countless pictures, everyone adjourned to the “Cool Seen”, the restaurant located in the former White Pass and Yukon warehouse behind the former Carcross train station which is now the tourism reception centre. A great display of pictures and St. Saviour’s history was in the reception centre prior to and after August 8th. After a lapse of four years, ministry in Carcross was re-established in January 2003. As the Rev. David Pritchard reflected following the Centennial celebration: “The real challenge is now the re-building of the congregation in Carcross – sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ hat has been shared in this historic Yukon community for 100 years.” |
