History and Organization of the Anglican Parish of Whitehorse
The Anglican Parish of Whitehorse (APW), originally composed of the congregations of Christ Church Cathedral and The Church of the Northern Apostles, began on an interim basis in January, 2009, in response to the vision of Bishop Terrence Buckle and the agreement of the two churches. The reason the two churches came together was to enable more effective ministry and mission and better stewardship of financial resources.
The vision of the APW included ministry and outreach with and to the outlying communities of Teslin, Carcross and Haines Junction. Archdeacon Sean Murphy was appointed by Bishop Buckle as Interim Rector. A Ministry Team was set up, consisting of Bishop Buckle, Archdeacon Murphy, The Rev. David Pritchard, The Rev. Deacon Sarah Usher, Lay Minister Ellen Zimmerman and then Cathedral Secretary Rob Christie, to give leadership to the new model of ministry.
After a more than year-long process of evaluation and discernment, the two Whitehorse congregations, at their 2010 Annual General meetings, passed motions to recommend to Bishop Buckle the continuation of the APW and the appointment of Archdeacon Murphy as Rector. Accepting these recommendations, Bishop Buckle announced in early February, 2010, the continuation of the APW and his appointment of Archdeacon Murphy.
In the organization of the APW, the Whitehorse congregations develop in their own local identity and function as separate entities, with their own Vestries and financial records, but with one Rector and Ministry Team. The two congregations share the cost of the Rector’s salary and housing on a two-thirds (Cathedral) and one-third (Northern Apostles) basis.
Another feature of the Anglican Parish of Whitehorse is the Advisory Council. The Council, consisting of clergy, wardens and treasurers of each congregation, meets every two months, or as required, to report on developments and monitor progress in the APW.
During the evaluation period in 2009, the APW evolved into a five-congregation Parish, including the Whitehorse churches, St. Philip’s, Teslin, St. Saviour’s, Carcross, and St. Christopher’s, Haines Junction. The outlying congregations function as separate entities much in the way that Christ Church Cathedral and Northern Apostles do. Ministry Team clergy provide sacramental and other ministry to and with these Churches, and work with local leadership in the development of ministry and mission initiatives.
